Grand Floridian, first house guests, Mary’s rainbow and Gumbeau!

40 days of unpacking and settling in, then on Day #41 (finally!) our happy place!

We joined Disney Vacation Club in 2006, and it was one of the best decisions we ever made for our family allowing for so many wonderful vacations with Ellen and countless experiences and memories of visiting the Walt Disney World parks and resorts, and Disney’s Vero Beach Resort. Last weekend, we made the one-hour trek south for our first stay at Disney’s Grand Floridian. Wish we had better pictures, but it was a nice break from nearly six weeks of getting so many things done to become a legal resident of this great state.

We’re getting a little more settled in every day as Delton’s new school year approaches. This past week included paperwork and fingerprinting at the Lake County district office. He attended his first staff meeting at Treadway Elementary where he met some of the ESE (Exceptional Student Education) staff – all very nice and welcoming as is everyone we’ve met here in Leesburg and the surrounding areas, so far. He also had a couple days of new teacher orientation in Clermont for two days (first time there) and a big clean-up day here at Treadway this weekend.

We were so looking forward to a visit from sister Wendy, but she and Bruce postponed and some dear friends from Louisiana, Danny & Anita, became our first official house guests here at the Fleur-de-Leesburg! We had a great time finding one of their favorite restaurants and now one of ours too, Perkins Restaurant & Bakery, then walking off those calories in the Sheriffs Ranches Thrift Store here in the ‘burg. When we tell you it is one of the best thrift shops we’ve ever visited, trust us. It is AWESOME!! Pretty sure we enjoyed it more than Mr. Danny and Mrs. Anita did, but we all agreed it was a big ol’ treasure chest, and Mary and I are planning visits to the other Sheriffs Ranches stores soon!

The Perkins’ restaurant on U.S. 441 in Mt. Dora is closer to our home than the one here in Leesburg.
Can’t wait to go back!

One more thing about that Perkins’ place, we liked it so much we ordered in a second helping Saturday night via PerkinsToGo.com including a mighty tasty pineapple upside down “Mammoth Muffin” that was very much a miniature cake and very yummy!! We shared and still had some left over.

We also stopped at the coolest little place and one we all loved over in nearby Tavares, the Twistee Treat, just six miles from our home with the best. chocolate. soft. serve. ice. cream. ever! It’s a must-do for future guests with sweet tooths – and a neat scene!!

First day we went, the sun was directly behind the big cone.
So Danny, being the professional photographer that he is, and
his lovely bride were so good-humored to return to the scene
of the crime at a much better time for a super-cool picture.
“Tourists!!!”

This next picture is something Mary captured some weeks ago; pretty sure it was our first Florida rainbow and even though the camera pic doesn’t do it justice, we believe it is shareworthy and reminded us of one of the most beautiful songs on Earth, ioho.

🎶 Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true 🎶
– E.Y. Harburg
Israel Kamakawiwoʻole “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” official YouTube video with more than 1,200,000,000 views!

Love that song – actually those songs with the late Israel Kamakawiwoʻole (1959-1997) covering both Judy Garland’s “Over the Rainbow” and Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” in one magical moment in music history.

How is Gumbeau ! ? !

Before we geaux, we must share some news about Gumbeau ’cause you know, much of the feedback we’ve gotten from our Facebook posts from Florida and new blog has been about Beau – how he’s liking it here (very well), is he making friends (not really acting overly social just yet, but we’re bringing him to a nearby dog park soon), and can you give him big hugs and let him know he is missed back home (certainly).

He’s really doing great and seems to really be enjoying these… dog days of summer… (((Womp, womp, womp)))

From the way he attacked his food bowl just now, it’s obvious that he enjoyed today’s lunch every bit as much as the tasty vittles Mary whipped up for his mama and papa this morning. And speaking of Gumbeau… a great big SHOUT OUT to two of his biggest fans and two of my favorite students ever (!) back home in south Louisiana, Kelsey & Mariah, who sent some awesome letters! We just got your package full of goodies and y’all are too sweet! Thank you so much, girls. You know me and Mrs. Mary and Gumbeau love y’all too!!

Guest bloggers wanted!

We want to feature fun Florida vacation memories of family and friends in one of our upcoming blogs, so please keep that in mind and send us pictures and memories of something you enjoyed doing here, exactly where it was and at least an approximate when you were here doing it! We think that might be fun instead of this being just about us (because after all, just how much can anyone stand reading about Gumbeau 🙂

You know we love hearing from you, so keep in touch!

All right so this in NOT Delton’s wall of sound, but our open dining area and living room is a work in progress with enough room for our furniture, a small library, television, stereo (ca. 1980’s Apple Audio) and some albums and other media (more on that as we get our act together; we’re working on it, already!)

Thanks so much for visiting. Please let us know you were here, share your news with us and send some feedback our way.
